About the Course

“How are you?”

The most asked and least answered question in the world. We say “fine”, “busy”, “tired” — and move on. Because most of the time, there isn’t actually space to tell the truth. No one is really listening.

Have you ever told someone something that mattered, and watched it disappear into advice, reassurance, or a “you should just…”? Most of us know this: we don’t want to be fixed. We want to be heard.

Empathy is a way of listening that helps us fall in love with people and what they need — no matter how they say it. It’s the quality of being with what is alive in another person, welcoming it with curiosity and love, without changing anything. It’s one of the most profound, and most forgotten, arts of being human.

And it can be learned.

In this one-time 2,5-hour online workshop, we’ll practice it together — slowly, experientially, and more playfully than it sounds.

Why this, why now

I experience the world as a place that is constantly trying to fix problems, change people, force systems — and a lot of it happens in an energy of fighting against each other. I deeply believe we need collaboration to get out of this mess, because violence only seeds more violence.

Empathy is to stop fixing, to stop fighting, and to start listening. Even when I strongly disagree with the argument, the opinion, or what this person is doing — it’s listening to their heart, to why they’re doing what they’re doing, until we can become allies. Until we can start finding a way for them to reach their needs in a way that also includes mine.

And empathy is also, for me, the way of healing. If someone is hurt, I want to be with them in their pain — not distract them from it, not enrage with them and blame someone else, not advise them. Just be with them. Because their pain is so precious: it’s their bleeding heart, their love, their deepest needs. To be with the pain is to connect with this sacred place. And only from there do they know how to move forward. Only they know. Empathy is the embodiment of this truth: it leaves the authority to choose how to live life firmly with every person.

What we’ll practice: three layers of empathy

1. Silent presence — the foundation. Before any technique, the radical, simple art of being with someone. We’ll practice the hardest thing for most of us: keeping our lips closed, and creating real space for the other person to arrive — moment by moment, exactly as they are. No advice. No “I know how you feel.” No fixing. Just presence.

2. Reflecting back — meeting the other exactly where they are. We’ll practice echoing back what we hear — the essence, the last thing said — with a genuine question mark, so the authority over their own experience stays with them. This is the layer where people say: “Yes. Exactly. You got me.”

3. Guessing feelings & needs — listening until the end of words. A gentle doorway into Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Behind every judgment, every attack, every withdrawal there is a beautiful need longing to be met — “Every judgment is a tragic expression of a beautiful unmet need.” We’ll practice listening past the words until the person in front of us can stop talking, because they’ve finally been understood for the core of what matters to them. Often you’ll feel it happen in your body: a release, a sense of arriving home.

What to expect

  • A short guided meditation to settle into presence

  • Live demonstrations

  • Exercises in pairs — practicing empathic listening and sharing about your own life

  • Reflection and sharing in the group

  • Your facilitator practices alongside you, with his own honesty and vulnerability

The whole evening is structured as a series of invitations, not demands. Move at your own pace, listen to your body, take what serves you. You’re even welcome to make tea / prepare a meal and eat in the middle. And if you notice this space isn’t nourishing for you, you’re free to leave — your body’s wisdom has the final vote.

You’ll leave with three layers of listening you can use the very next day — at the kitchen table, in the office, with your partner, your teenager, your colleague, your mother-in-law. And with a felt memory of what it’s like to be truly heard.

An honest note

This workshop won’t change your life in 2,5 hours. Mastery takes years of practice. This evening is a beginning with tools that work tomorrow. And a doorway, if you want to walk through it.

And: empathy is not agreeing. Not positivity. Not a technique to calm people down or win them over. If it’s used to get something from someone, it’s not empathy anymore — it’s manipulation with a nice face. You enter empathy not when you try to change people, but when you sincerely want to be touched by them.

Who this is for

You. Really. No previous experience, no special vocabulary, no belief system required — just curiosity about humans, and a morning for yourself.

You’ll feel at home here if you recognize any of this:

  • You keep having the same argument with your partner, your parents or your teenager — and you’re done with it

  • You’re the person everyone comes to with their problems — and you’re carrying too much

  • You wish someone would just listen to you, instead of advising, fixing or minimizing you

  • You’ve walked a path of meditation, therapy or self-development — or you’ve never done any of that and find all of this a bit esoteric

  • You simply want to be a better friend, child, parent, colleague — a better human

And especially: if you want to contribute to a more beautiful world. If you look at the state of things — climate change, biodiversity loss, a world in collapse — and you feel both the urgency and the powerlessness. If you want to face the issues of this time instead of closing your eyes, and search for change that doesn’t just fix surface problems. If you’re looking for connection in a more and more separated world, and you believe — or want to believe — in the beauty and goodness of every human.

Why this, in the end

I truly believe that through empathy we can care for everyone’s pain and everyone’s needs. When we welcome pain, it stops being suffering — it becomes a sweet pain. And from there, each person knows their own way forward. Only they know.

That’s why I hold this workshop, and why I want to inspire people to learn empathy, empathic listening and NVC. Not as a technique, but as a way of granting sovereignty to every person — grounded in the trust that each human heart is carrying love and wants to contribute to a more beautiful world. Imagine what happens when we listen to each other until we find the allies behind the enemies — and grow islands of sustainable ways of living with each other and with earth.

I’m glad you’re here. Let’s begin.

Matthias Flury

Hi. My name is Matthias. To be honest with you, I’m incredibly hesitant to write this short biography about myself. Part of the resistance comes from a fear of not being enough - it’s an insecurity that often comes alive since for many years of my life my need for connection wasn’t met, no matter what I tried. Out of this experience I’m shy to show and present myself, even to an unknown reader, to not go through the pain of rejection again. Another source for this hesitation is that I’ve got an idea of how I need to present myself here as a teacher. “I need to sell myself well and in a way that will make you trust me and curious to learn from me”. And I’m worried that I’ll try to perform as something I’m not in order to achieve that. Underneath the pressure of trying to be perfect I’m certain I’ll lose something incredibly important. I’ll lose connection to myself and with that any hope of actually contributing value to you.
That’s why I’ll start this introduction of myself like this. I’m looking forward to meeting you and exploring together how we can connect to our feelings and unknown desires. How we can hold space and lovingly meet each other exactly where we are in our authentic selves. This is the place where relationships gain intimacy and depth, where love grows and where life begins to make sense.
Just in case you actually want to know about my background: I started learning about NVC in 2019, took my first lessons with Empathie Stadt Zurich in 2020, and completed my education in 2023 with a course about teaching and embodying NVC by CNVC-Trainer Yoram Mosenzon. I regularly support NVC-teachers as an assistant in their courses and occasionally teach myself. If you have any questions you can reach me at matthias.flury@mail.ch.
